Editor’s Note: I shared this with my readers at the beginning of the month, and now I’m republishing this notice as a quick reminder! I have just a couple of slots left in January, and if you contact me by the end of the year, you can still lock in the discounted rate for editing, proofreading, and creative coaching. Read on for details.
Hey everyone — I just want to take a few minutes to let you know how incredibly grateful I am to you for tuning into my articles and Jene’s writing prompts each update. Over the years, I’ve gotten a lot of touching feedback from aspiring writers who’ve used our articles to find the motivation to pursue their dreams. And that means so much to me!
Today I want to give a shoutout to another resource that’s helped countless authors improve their writing skills and pursue their dreams of breaking into print. Each November, hundreds of thousands of people set aside the time to write a novel for National Novel Writing Month. Writing 50,000 words in a month isn’t easy (I write for a living, so I should know!), especially if you’ve never tackled a big project before.
But once NaNoWriMo is over, some writers start to have a problem. If you’re a NaNo author, maybe this will sound familiar to you — once you’ve finished your manuscript, you just aren’t sure how to whip it into shape for publication. Maybe you need help fixing plot holes and developing your characters. Maybe you need guidance on how to better “show” and not “tell.” Or maybe the novel’s close to being complete, but you need an editor to go through it, line by line, with a critical eye before you release it to the world.
That’s where I can help. I’m a professional freelance copyeditor and creative writing coach — when I’m not working with a small press publisher preparing books for publication, I take on private clients. And for a limited time only, I want to celebrate the end of NaNoWriMo by offering a very special discount on all of my services. (Please note: you don’t need to be a NaNo winner to be eligible!) Keep reading for the details.
What Exactly Does A Creative Coach Do?
Sometimes, you need a professional critique of your manuscript or guidance on finishing a project, but you aren’t ready for a professional edit yet. If you know your novel needs revision but aren’t sure where to start, this is the option for you. And until 12/31/15, I’m offering creative coaching sessions 50% off. Just click here to learn more.
When you book a session with me, I’ll read up to 5,000 words of your writing. Then I’ll sit down with you and give you an in-depth, personal critique and coaching session over Skype.
I’ll help you identify plot holes and weaknesses in your story. Show you how to develop your characters to form a real emotional connection with your reader. If your story has hit a wall, we can brainstorm where to take it next… Or we can talk about any other aspect of your writing that could use an outside perspective.
Here’s what one client I’ve worked with for the past four years has had to say about my coaching:
“Julie made my character come alive”
I started working with Julie about six months ago. I was looking for support around working on a long term writing piece, and Julie’s feedback was exactly what I need. Her questions/comments lead me to a clearer focus, and made the character come alive. I was also impressed when — due to changing circumstance — I decided to change my work focus and started working on another project. Not only was Julie open to making the change; but she also continued to guide me in directions that work on the new project. I’m now beginning it afresh, seeing it coming together in a way that wouldn’t been possible without Julie’s input.
— M.C. Piper, Author of “Wanted: Passionate Hero, Experience Preferred”
There’s just one catch: I’m only offering this discount to the first 5 people to set up a session. As a full-time freelance writer and editor, the number of new clients can I fit into my schedule is limited. To get started, you need to visit my signup page, click “request a session,” and tell me a little about yourself and your project!
Editing and Proofreading
Not interested in getting an in-depth critique? Maybe your novel is already written. You just want to polish it up before you approach publishers or self-publish it on Amazon. Don’t worry, I have a deal for you too.
Through the end of December, I’m offering 30% off my editing and proofreading services. If you’ve written a larger novel, that can add up to a significant savings — without sacrificing quality by hiring an inexperienced editor. In fact, I’ve edited and proofread dozens of novels now available in print, most of which have hit the Amazon bestsellers lists and received glowing praise. (I can’t take all the credit for that, of course. I’ve worked with some seriously talented authors!)
I don’t want to spend too much time talking myself up here, though. Instead, I’m just going to pass along what some of the writers I’ve worked with have had to say, and you can judge for yourself:
“Julie’s line-edits clarified my prose, allowing a tight story line to shine”
I enlisted Julie’s help in editing a 110,000 word speculative fiction novel. Not only was she prompt and very professional, her edits really helped to polish a rough slab of fiction into a publishable piece. What’s great about Julie is her ability to see far into a novel and really strengthen the architecture of the story. Numerous times she found structural errors that would have hampered the integrity of my plot and she helped fix them.
Her overall editing was fantastic, but her line-edits also clarified my prose, allowing for a tight story line to shine through. Julie has a way of re-arranging sentences and getting to the crux of each line so that it sounds natural and organic. Her keen eye reconstructed many an awkward phrase and created a flow that other editors can’t seem to accomplish.
— M.K. Sauer, Author of “Star-Crossed: The Confounding Calamities of Byron the Cad and Marietta the Zombie”
“Julie was instrumental in bringing my first book to life”
Julie Rodriguez was no less than instrumental in bringing my first book to life. Not only is she easy to work with and quick to boot, she does a good job of actually understanding your work and tailoring her editing style to what you need, rather than forcing it into some preconceived notion of what’s expected. She’s all about making your work into its highest and most idealized self.
None of this is to say she’s a big softy, though. She’s fair and honest and will come down with the might (metaphorical) pen to make corrections if your work needs it. Of course, she counter-balances this by also letting you know when you’re doing something right, and it makes her happy, or sad, or scared, or whatever you intend. The best thing I can say about Julie is she never skimps on quality work, but she makes the editing process fun!

Remember, this offer is only good if you book services with me through the end of December. No matter what your budget looks like, I encourage you to contact me as soon as possible to ensure my availability. I do offer payment plans and the option to pay for editing on a chapter-by-chapter basis rather than a large lump sum.
